Thermoset Compression Molding of BMC Architectural Lighting Components

At Globe Plastics we were able to demonstrate the superiority of our processes when an architectural lighting customer asked us to manufacture an enclosure for use in a harsh chemical environment. We manufacture molded composite structures, which are perfect for this kind of application due to their chemical resistance. Using UL Listed BMC (bulk molding compound) and our 500 ton compression molding machine, we manufactured the enclosures, which are 10" in diameter, 14" high, between 0.156" and 0.500" thick, and weigh 2,700 grams. We used our 500 ton clamping force machine to mold the enclosures to tight tolerances of ±0.005" with a shrinkage allowance of 0.0015". Featuring molded-in inserts and molded-in threads, the enclosures were wired then potted to prevent moisture wicking. After molding, the enclosures underwent dimensional and visual inspection as well as water and air leak testing. Working from customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings, we followed UL standards to produce the enclosures and now manufacture 20,000 of them annually for our domestic client.
