Precision Compression Molding of BMI and Phenolic Long Glass Fiber Glass Components

A customer in the oil and gas industry needed moldings composed of BMI long glass fiber or carbon and Phenolic long glass for various oilfield components. At Globe Plastics we specialize in compression molding processes for advanced composite applications and were an ideal fit for the project. We utilized our 80-500 ton capacity compression molding machines for the 1 cavity compression molding and over molding. We also molded-in threads and inserts to provide a flexural strength of 135 MPa at 250C and a flex modulus of 13 GPa at 250C. We molded the BMI with long glass fiber or carbon and Phenolic long glass with a material thickness of .75". After secondary CNC machining the overall component dimensions were 7" in length, 10" in diameter, with a height of 10". The component weights ranged from 20-1800 grams. The shrinkage allowance was 0, with a tolerance of ±.002". Non-destructive testing was completed in addition to providing a certificate of conformance. We produce 100-1000 oilfield components annually for the US, Canada, and Mexico with a lead time of 4-6 weeks.
