Compression Molding Services for a Horn/Wave Guide

In this project, a manufacturer of professional audio equipment contracted Globe Plastics to provide a complete solution for a horn/wave guide that is designed for use in professional audio applications. This project began with a single cavity mold, which was derived from the customer's specifications. It utilized cost saving modular tooling specially designed for compression molding this part as well as future parts.

The material selected for this product was Globe's AcoustaComp® composite molding compound, which is unique for audio applications; it's superior tensile and flexural strength also allowed the part to easily pass the severe drop testing requirements. Overall dimensions of this finished product were 12" in length and width, 10" in height; it featured a wall thickness of 0.250", weighed 1500 grams, and was molded to tolerances of ±0.005" Based on the spectacular success of this project Globe's Customers have expanded their product offerings to much larger sizes and benefitted from the modular tooling system in terms of development cost. Now molding is performed on 200-500 ton compression molding machines, for parts weighing up to 22 pounds.

Globe produces 10,000 - 20,000 acoustic horns/wave guides annually, with shipments to locations in the United States, Mexico, Europe and the Far East.
